General rules:
- For at least two weeks, minimize exposure to sun, and discourage from swimming in fresh water, salt, or chlorinated water;
- Properly cleanse the tattooed area (see Step Two);
- Apply antibiotic ointment and/or cream (see Step 3;
- Use sterile bandage(s) or other sterile dressing(s) when applicable (see Step 4);
- Client shall seek medical attention from a healthcare provider at the first sign of an infection or an allergic reaction, and if so, agree to report any diagnosed infection or allergic reaction to the Texas Department of State Health Services, Tattoo and Body Piercing Program at (512) 834-6711.
Step 1: Remove wrap
Plastic wrap
- Leave on for 2-4 hours
- Remove from tattoo by pulling off tape
- Throw away
Tattoo Bandage
- Leave on for 24 hours
- Run warm water with soap
- Remove by pulling off
- Throw away
Step 2: Clean
- Recommend Tattoo specific soap
- Antibacterial soap if nothing else
- Using warm water gently rub off any ink and/or debris with your finger
- DO NOT scrub vigorously!
- Rinse gently with warm water
- PAT DRY with a clean towel
Step 3: apply lotion
- Recommend tattoo specific lotion
- Avoid lotions that contain petroleum
- Apply only a thin layer
- Rub into skin thoroughly
Step 4: Ongoing after care
- Apply lotion 3-5 times daily or as needed
- Clean 1-3 times daily, or as needed; do this for up to 2 weeks after tattoo at least
- Avoid sunburns
